If you’re dweller of the internet, you may have heard about the “dead internet theory”. From my understanding, the dead internet theory suggests that the vast majority of activity on the internet is bots and automatically generated content. I don’t know if this true, nor do I have the training or education to go about determining if it is.
However, I do know that I miss the internet of old, as poetically described by modern poet Bill Burr in his song “Welcome to the Internet”. Nowadays, outside of work I primarily visit only two websites. Just two. YouTube and Reddit. That’s it. That’s so small, isn’t it? Back in the day, you could visit dozens of different sites. One site I miss in particular is dongbufeng.net, which used to host a website discussing the show Avatar the Last Airbender. I remember visiting this website and it’s chatroom to discuss new episodes of Avatar as Book 3: Fire was airing.
I tried visiting that site again recently. It was porn.
I’ll admit this blog was also inspired by YouTuber Nick Robinson’s video titled “MICHAELSOFT BINBOWS”, specifically the website discussed in that video known as Alf’s World. I won’t pretend to be as thorough a documentarian or as well-travelled as the individual who operated that site.
However, if I have these complaints about the state of things, but don’t do anything to solve them, what right do I have to complain? I’ll admit I have a lot of complaints about the state of the world that I haven’t done anything about, but those are for another day. Baby steps. If want the the internet to be better, it starts with me.
I feel a little guilty about this blog because the annual wordpress fee was $120 plus taxes. This will not cause me to break the bank or anything of the sort. I work a well paying job. However, I feel guilty spending money when I should be saving for my wedding and for a down payment on a house. However, I figure what’s the point of having money if you cannot spend it on things that bring you joy.
I certainly could’ve not paid for any of wordpress’ packages, but then my url would’ve needed to have .wordpress in it, and that just feels unprofessional and lazy. I certainly don’t expect anyone to every stumble across this blog in the cacophony of noise and light that is the internet, particularly since small independent blogs were a dying breed a decade ago. I really missed the train. However, this is about my own standards and I say this “Fuck having .wordpress in my url”
Anyways, this is the end of the post. I appreciate if you stuck around and read more. It would make me genuinely happy and I hope it will make you happy to. I do not know if the happiness of a stranger on the internet matters to you. It probably shouldn’t. However, if anything in this blogs makes you smile, let me know. It’ll make me smile too.
